Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

Believe it or not, plaque can rear its ugly head in any mouth–even yours–no matter how meticulous you try to be. For example, if you have deep grooves in your teeth, or a receding gum line, schedule a dental checkup immediately.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. (See picture.) This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities will originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

A fabulous smile with fabulous teeth isn’t always the reality for Whitestone, Flushing, Whitestone, and College Point folks. We encourage anyone who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a significant investment but the truth of just how much it will cost for veneers, braces, dental implants and even teeth whitening may surprise you. At our Flushing cosmetic dentistry office you can expect to learn about cosmetic dentistry, resotrative dentistry, dental implants, sedation dentistry, general dentistry and any number of other dental services.

An Air-Dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush

An Air-dried Toothbrush Is A Healthy Toothbrush Whitestone
One of the most important habits you can form is to always allow your toothbrush to completely air dry between uses. The best way to let the toothbrush air dry is by placing it in a toothbrush holder on the counter with the bristles pointing up. This method of storage is much better than sticking it away in a drawer since it will take longer to dry in there.

Make sure your toothbrush is dry before you seal it away in a travel container.

Buy two toothbrushes at your local drugstore. Alternate between the two so each has time to fully dry out between uses.

Remember to replace your toothbrush (or toothbrushes) every 3-4 months, or sooner if you’ve had a cold!

Cosmetic Dentistry: Gum Contouring

Cosmetic Dentistry: Gum Contouring In Flushing

If you are a regular visitor to our blog here at Parsons Smile Center, you have probably read many articles on cosmetic dentistry procedures. Dr. Fady Salha is a master of smile makeovers.

Dental bonding, crowns, and porcelain veneers can take care of teeth that are chipped, broken, or misshapen.

Our patients with stained or dull teeth can have a sparkly white smile with teeth whitening. For ordinary cavities, there are tooth-colored fillings, inlays, and onlays.

Dental implants are gaining popularity among dental patients who want to restore missing teeth. If your teeth are misaligned, we provide a number of orthodontic options.

What if your cosmetic dental problem has to do with your gums? Are you one of the many dental patients whose gums are too long, too short, or uneven? There is a solution for gum problems as well. The answer is gum contouring surgery.

With gum contouring, sometimes called tissue sculpting or gum reshaping, a Flushing dentist or periodontist can improve the shape or size of your gums.

Gum reshaping is not always a cosmetic procedure. If the gums have receded to a point where the tooth root is susceptible to decay, gum surgery can restore the natural, healthy gumline and protect tooth root and bone.

For more information about gum contouring, call us at 718-939-0862.

Smokeless Is Not Harmless For Flushing Tobacco Chewers

cosmetic dentist Whitestone

Cigarette sales at most stores have decreased in the past decade, but some tobacco consumers have switched to smokeless products.

There is a common misconception (especially among teens) that smokeless tobacco is harmless. This is absolutely not true. Regardless of the specific type: spit tobacco, snuff, chew, or pinch, this form of tobacco is as deadly as old-school cigarettes.

At Parsons Smile Center, we encounter serious consequences of smokeless tobacco use because many occur in the mouth. Oral cancer, mouth lesions, gum disease and tooth decay are the most common dental problems caused by smokeless tobacco.

Keeping a pinch between your cheek and gum all day is worse than keeping an all-day sucker tucked in there. The tobacco contains almost as much sugar as the candy but delivers harmful chemicals as an added bonus. The dangers are two-fold: the tobacco erodes the teeth and also causes the gums to pull away from teeth.

Precancerous Mouth Lesion Screenings: Mouth lesions are painful sores that could eventually become cancer. If smokeless tobacco use is stopped, the lesions ordinarily disappear within a year.

Oral Cancer: Smokeless tobacco use increases the risk for several types of life-threatening cancers including those of the mouth, gums, lips, tongue, and throat.

Oral cancers can be as deadly as lung cancer and usually require surgery. If the patient is fortunate and the cancer is successfully removed with surgery, the collateral damage to the face, neck, or jaw is not pretty.

These are the main dental risks of smokeless tobacco. Other risks include addiction and heart disease.

At Parsons Smile Center, we perform oral cancer screenings and mouth lesions examinations. To receive more details, or schedule an appointment, call 718-939-0862.

If want to quit using smokeless tobacco products, we recommend that you talk to Dr. Salha at Parsons Smile Center, your  primary care doctor, or your local pharmacist.

resotrative dentistry Whitestone

Hello, Whitestone! When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? If the answer is, ‘Not really,’ then you may want to consider these 5 reasons to make some small improvements or undergo a complete smile re-design.

Protect Teeth From Cracks

College Point cosmetic dental and adult braces

Ouch! No dental patient wants the pain and inconvenience of a cracked tooth, so today in the Parsons Smile Center dental blog we are going to focus on how to avoid this preventable problem.

The first thing to remember is that avoiding a cracked tooth is not rocket science; you should steer clear of chewing on hard things if you don’t want a cracked tooth! This includes ice, hard candy, and (sorry, cinephiles) popcorn.

Also, protect against any impact to the mouth that could be experienced during sporting events. If you are a member of a local rec center basketball, ultimate frisbee, or flag football league, pick up a mouth guard at a sporting goods store.

Tooth grinding is never a good thing, and it can even lead to a cracked tooth or temporomandibular conditions. Talk to your dentist, doctor, or physical therapist and try some stress reduction techniques to keep your jaw nice and relaxed.

Be sure to keep your regular check-ups with your dentist because your dentist can spot possible problems that could predispose you to a cracked tooth such as an uneven chewing surface or brittle teeth.

If you have a cracked tooth, you’ll want to pursue the correct course of treatment and, if needed, explore some cosmetic dentistry procedures to fix any visible damage such as veneers, a porcelain crown, or a dental implant.

Hi. I’m Dr. Fady Salha. I practice general and cosmetic dentistry. My practice, Parsons Smile Center, offers the following services:

dental implants
sedation dentistry

Teen Teeth: Adolescent Oral Health

 adolescent dental issues

If you are a teenager or the parent of a teenager in the Flushing area, today’s Parsons Smile Center post is for you. Dental risks for teens include both developmental and lifestyle-related factors.

At our practice, we see dental caries and gum disease far too often in teens. Possible causes include:

insufficient dental hygiene, unhealthy diet, malocclusion (misaligned bite), smoking, hormonal changes, tooth grinding, mouth breathing, eating disorders, and side effects of medications.

Children may get lax about brushing and flossing as they get older. Furthermore, some teens’ diets become worse when they have more freedom to choose what to eat. Few parents let their four year-old have an energy drink, but some teens will drink them when out of their parents’ sight.

Malocclusion makes proper brushing and flossing challenging, leaving even vigilant brushers with decay from difficult-to-remove food particles. Malocclusion can also trigger TMD (Temporomandibular disorder). If you suspect that your teen’s bite is not aligned properly, or if your teen sees a clicking sound in the jaw joint, call Parsons Smile Center at 718-939-0862 to schedule an exam.

In spite of numerous public service campaigns aimed at preventing teen smoking, many adolescents take up the habit even before they graduate from high school. Smoking wrecks teeth as surely as it wrecks lungs.

Parents of teenagers know that puberty has a significant impact on physical and emotional health. Puberty causes all sorts of changes in the body, and the mouth is no exception. Increased hormone levels (especially in females) can cause the body to react to a very small amount of plaque, triggering inflammation of gum tissue and increased risk of the more advanced form of gum disease (known as periodontitis). Your dentist can counsel you if more frequent professional cleanings are necessary to preserve gum health.

If you visit any soccer field or basketball court in New York, you will see that many young athletes fail to protect their teeth. If your adolescent participates in a contact sport, meet with us about custom athletic mouthguards.

One of the teen dental issues affecting many young men and women is wisdom teeth. It’s best to start monitoring your teen’s wisdom teeth early so they can be treated before they bring about troubles with the jaw or surrounding teeth. And you certainly don’t want to send your high-school grad to an out-of-state college without addressing his or her third molars. If problems emerge, your youth won’t be near their regular dentist, will probably miss class, and will either need to come home or use an out-of-network dentist or oral surgeon. If you don’t have a family dentist, Fady Salha of Parsons Smile Center can examine your teen and evaluate X-rays to guide you on the best course of action for his or her wisdom teeth.

This article is by no means exhaustive on the essential subject of adolescent oral health. Future posts will discuss orthodontia, oral piercings, eating disorders, and abnormal teeth growth.

If you are looking for a family dentist in the Flushing area, I invite you to schedule an appointment at Parsons Smile Center by calling 718-939-0862. We have been providing trusted dental care to Flushing families since 1990.  For more details about teen dental health; or cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, or dental implants, call today.

Do You Have Xerostomia?

Bad Breath Treatment Whitestone

Most dental patients know that they can go to their local dentist for toothaches, cleanings, and bleeding gums (not to mention cosmetic dentistry procedures such as a smile makeover), but there are some lesser-known oral concerns that your College Point dentist can also help you with.

A lack of saliva causes dry mouth (technically called xerostomia), and it can be quite uncomfortable. It also predisposes New York dental patients to a host of problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. There are some treatments, but a lot of Flushing residents experience dry mouth because of certain medications or diseases, so make sure to bring a list of current medications with you to your appointment.

Bad breath is usually a result of bacteria build-up in the mouth, and regular trips to your dentist can help you keep your mouth clean and the bacteria count within a sweet-smelling range. But, if you have good oral hygiene and regular check-ups and cleanings, then your dentist will be crucial in helping you discover the source of your halitosis.

Jaw clicking and jaw discomfort are symptoms you should have checked with your dentist immediately as they can be a signs of serious oral issues.

Hi. I’m Dr. Fady Salha, an experienced Flushing dentist. I want my patients to come to me with all of their oral concerns. The friendly staff here at Parsons Smile Center would love to schedule an appointment with you and answer any questions you have about the ailments mentioned above, as well as questions about teeth whitening and dental implants.
